Bir zamanlar ABD’nin kanayan yarası olan Kuzey-Güney iç savaşı filmin konusunu oluşturmakta. Dört yıl süren bu iç savaş büyük yıkımlara yol açmış, hatta ABD’nin ikiye bölünmesine ramak kalmıştı. “Rüzgâr Gibi Geçti” filmi bu iç savaşta daha çok cephe gerisindeki güneyli halkın yaşadıklarını anlatmaktayken, “Gettysburg” filmi ise cephedeki olaylara eğiliyor. İç savaşın kaderini belirleyen Gettysburg Savaşı çok kanlı bir savaş olmuş ve her iki taraftan da yaklaşık 50 bin kişi ölmüştü.
